Change Is The Only Constant

Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.

This optimistic quote is frequently attributed to Theodor Geisel (aka the popular children’s author, Dr. Seuss). In fact, the saying likely pre-dates him by 100 years and should be attributed to the poet Ludwig Jacobowski.

Regardless of the true origin, it’s a useful quote to pull out during times of change; especially ones that are tinged with sadness. Here are a few more of my favorite quotes on change:

“Life is a series of hellos and goodbyes. I’m afraid it’s time for goodbye again.”
Billy Joel, singer/songwriter (source)

“This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”
Winston Churchill, politician (source)

“People fear leaving their safe harbor of the known and venturing off into the unknown. Human beings crave certainty – even when it limits them.”
Robin Sharma, Canadian writer and leadership speaker (source)

“I don’t like looking back. I’m always constantly looking forward. I’m not the one to sort of sit and cry over spilt milk. I’m too busy looking for the next cow.”
Gordon Ramsay, celebrity chef (source)

“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”
Walt Disney, animator and film producer (unverified)

“Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.”
André Gide, author (source)

These inspirational quotes help reinforce that, while change makes us uncomfortable, it can also bring new opportunities. Every new beginning creates a chance to learn anew. A chance to grow.

Besides, the world is not static so change is inevitable. Which reminds me of my favorite quote about change which is from Heraclitus:

Change is the only constant in life.

Jonathan, nice post! And I have my own favorite thought for this: Life is infinite, but it is still too short to not move into growth. And by definition, growth is the unknown. It is how we learned what we know and do today.

Nobody likes to say good bye and here is one more quote that I like “Never say goodbye because goodbye means going away and going away means forgetting.”
    J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan
We humans get accostumed to see the things that we have and the people that we like, so we when that presence is absent or removed, the feeling of sadness is unavoidable.
    Until we meet again!
