Game On: How SAP-Led Customer Experiences Help the San Jose Sharks Win More Fans

Published June 17, 2018 by ASUG

Delivering a standout customer experience is even more critical when your fans can just as easily interact with you away from your venue as within it. The San Jose Sharks know this all too well, which is why the team is re-imagining what they want the customer experience to look like for the crowds who attend their games. And the team’s President, Jonathan Becher, is bringing in technology to play a vital role in helping personalize these experiences for fans.

“The formula for happiness used to be if the home team won, the fans left happy. It was that simple,” said Becher. “Now they want to be entertained. They demand better food, and a higher variety of food. It’s become a culinary experience. They want music within the games, as well. And so, just like software companies are learning, sports are learning it’s not just the game, it’s about the experience around the game.”

Rallying Around A Playoff Towel

The San Jose Sharks organization went all out when it came to the rally towels for their first round series against the Anaheim Ducks, so it’s no surprise they’re at it again for the team’s second round series with the Vegas Golden Knights.

The Sharks went with a ‘Duck Hunt’ theme during the opening round, so their second round rally towels are going to have more of a Middle Ages feel to them.

Becher’s Bytes: Rallying Around A Playoff Towel

Rallying Around A Playoff Towel

Even though you’ve probably waved a rally towel before, it’s unlikely you ever thought about who first came up with the idea. The rally towel likely has its origins at Western Kentucky University where basketball coach E. A. Diddle waved a red towel on the sideline during games. Rally towels came to professional sports in 1975 when former Pittsburgh Steelers radio broadcaster Myron Cope created the Terrible Towel to stir up the fans.

At the San Jose Sharks, we take our rally towel seriously. We design a new one for every home playoff game and we don’t recycle our towels for each game, let alone each series. It’s extra work and it costs a lot more but people seem to appreciate it.

Becher’s Bytes: Welcome to Playoff Mode

Welcome to Playoff Mode

Do you remember the first time you saw a hockey game in person?

I remember like it was yesterday. In 1993 I was a relative newbie to Silicon Valley when a work colleague invited me to a Sharks vs. Detroit game. Detroit scored in the first 2 minutes of the game but the Sharks won 6-4 on the back of a three-point game from Sandis Ozolinsh. In a foreshadowing of the playoffs, Jamie Baker scored a pivotal goal as time ran out in the second period.

[…]

25 years after I went to my first game I joined the Sharks organization as co-President. I’m still a die-hard fan but now I’m in the building every night, not just on game days. It’s a completely different perspective on Team Teal – sort of like watching your favorite play from backstage – so I plan to use this blog to share my experiences with you.
