Rather than trying to control everything top-down with &quot;cascading&quot; sets of complex objectives, organizations could set clear high-level objectives and rules on engagement, then give departments the flexibility to react fast to changing events. 

Top-down planning, after all, is one of the big things that went wrong with the former Soviet Union -- it proved impossible to carry out effectively, yet many organizations still try to attempt the same type of planning cycles. 

Capitalism, for all its faults, is a remarkably effective self-organizing system that reacts very quickly to changes, all based on a few simple &quot;rules&quot;.

I would argue that the ultimate recipe for &quot;simplicity&quot; in your organization is not necessarily lots of meetings on how to streamline overlapping processes. It may instead be about embracing the chaos of daily change, but with clear rules that turn that chaos into profitable growth...]]></description>
