I emerged from my man cave to discover it’s that time again. Lake Superior State University (LSSU) released its amazing 37th annual “List of Words Banished from the Queen’s English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness”. The idea for the list was hatched at a 1975 New Year’s Eve party in an attempt to win the future and since then LSSU has received a ginormous number of nominations.
LSSU expected blowback from pet parents when they released the 2012 list:
- Baby bump
- Shared sacrifice
- Man cave
- The new normal
- Pet parents
- Win the future
- Thank you in advance
We may need some shared sacrifice to eliminate these words but thank you in advance.
Well, that puts a crimp in our company messaging … how will we get through any keynote without highlighting our amazing innovations? I’m just sorry that “game-changer” didn’t make the list, and I know some kittens who agree (http://yfrog.com/kimxjbbj). I wholeheartedly support everything else here and look forward to your readers adding their own nominations to the list.
Mark – “game changer” was the first thing that came to my mind as well. I’d also like to nominate “tipping point”, “value add” and “leverage” to this list please 🙂
Did we already ban “synergy”? If not, add that one.
I’m ok with much of the list; however, you should never banish thanking someone period. What were they thinking?
Aside from a notable few, I hadn’t actually heard these injected into a corporate conversation yet. (Pet Parents? really? Win the Future? Tickeration? I must not be in the right field to hear these…I’m in DoD Electronic Medical Health industry…)
I agree with Mark Yolton. It’s going to take a lot of “heavy lifting” to “get our arms around” this list.
Add the word “solutions” when talking aboutsoftware and when liquids are not part of the sentence.
If you really want to take a “holistic approach” at words that should be banned in 2012, let’s not forget “winning”… or rather, “#winning”
I’d like to add “incubate” if it doesn’t involve pathogens or poultry.
Awesome except when at the Grand Canyon!
